THE PERSON BEHIND THE STORY
Betina was my daughter. A person full of warmth, humour and dreams. Someone who saw beauty in the world and left her mark on the people she met.
Her life was affected by an addiction to prescribed opioids that she had never chosen. It did not begin with a wish to become addicted. In this book, I tell the story of her life, our relationship and the struggle to find help as the consequences reached into our everyday lives.
On 24 April 2025, I lost Betina. She was 37. I write as her father, with the love, memories and experiences I carry with me.
I hope her story will build understanding. For people struggling themselves. For families trying to help. And for the professionals who meet people like Betina in their work.
ADDICTION THAT WAS NEVER A CHOICE
What happens when medicine intended to relieve pain becomes part of a problem you cannot find your own way out of?
Through Betina’s story, you encounter an addiction that grew out of prescribed treatment, the difficulty of acknowledging the problem and a family’s attempts to understand and help.
Addiction also becomes part of the lives of those around the person affected. The book explores care, worry, helplessness and the difficult choices families may face when love alone cannot solve the problem.
What is it like to seek help as a patient and as a father? This story raises questions about responsibility, continuity of care and who sees the whole person across different parts of the system.
Betina was more than her addiction. But addiction had consequences for her life, and for those of us who loved her.
FOR PROFESSIONALS, EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES
A life seen from the other side of the medical record.
BETINA is my personal account as a father. It offers a patient and family perspective that can open up professional reflection and conversations about addiction, care and responsibility.
Read or listen to the story →Gain insight into how treatment, addiction and contact with healthcare can be experienced by a person and her family. Bring the story into conversations about patient relationships, continuity and working with families.
Explore the feelings and relationships involved: love, fear of raising difficult issues, helplessness and the effort to stay connected to someone you are afraid of losing.
Use the story to start conversations about medicines, addiction that was never a choice, and prejudice. In health and social care education, it can prompt discussion about the person behind the medical record and the family’s place in care.
Read about a father’s attempts to understand, support and find help. A story for those who know the worry, and for those who want to understand what another family is going through.
